62 Million Tonnes of E-Waste: The Real Numbers Behind the Devices We Discard
In 2022, the world generated 62 million tonnes of electronic waste — and only 22.3% was formally recycled. Here is what those numbers actually mean, and why the solution starts at home.
Imagine a pile of old phones, laptops, and broken televisions weighing as much as 4,500 Eiffel Towers.
That’s approximately what 62 million tonnes looks like — and it’s the amount of electronic waste the world generated in a single year.

And we’re not keeping pace with it.
The Recycling Gap
Of those 62 million tonnes, only 22.3% was formally collected and recycled in an environmentally responsible way. The remaining 77.7% was landfilled, incinerated, or processed informally — often in ways that release toxic substances including lead, mercury, and cadmium into soil and groundwater. We are producing e-waste far faster than we can responsibly process it.
What We’re Actually Throwing Away
One of the most counterintuitive aspects of the e-waste crisis is what these discarded devices actually contain.
Smartphones, tablets, and laptops are dense with valuable materials: gold in circuit boards, copper in wiring, lithium in batteries, cobalt in cells, and rare earth elements in screens and speakers. When these devices end up in landfill or informal recycling streams, those materials are largely lost.

The painful irony: the mining operations that produce these materials in the first place are among the most environmentally destructive processes in modern industry. We mine them once, use them briefly, and then bury them.
Why “Recycling Your Phone” Isn’t the Full Answer
Drop-off recycling programs exist, and they do recover some materials. But they are not sufficient at scale — as the 22.3% formal recycling rate makes clear.
The more fundamental problem is that recycling is positioned as the responsible endpoint of device ownership, when in reality it is the second-to-last resort in the environmental hierarchy:
Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → Recover → Dispose
Reuse — keeping a device in active service for longer, whether as your primary phone or repurposed as a secondary display — prevents the generation of e-waste in the first place. It is more effective than any recycling program because it doesn’t require the device to be processed at all.
The Scale Starts Small
62 million tonnes is an abstraction. What isn’t abstract: the drawer most households have, somewhere, with a phone that still works but hasn’t been charged in two years.

Most of those devices could be put back to use today. Not as primary phones — but as dedicated clocks, ambient displays, kitchen timers, or household dashboards. The functionality is still there. The screen is still working. The battery can still hold a charge when plugged in.
The 62-million-tonne figure is shaped, in part, by the assumption that a phone’s useful life ends when it stops being your main device. That assumption is worth questioning.
